Imagine a life with an overbearing mother whose expectations drown you in a world of money and standing, of who’s with whom, of your actions judged by others. Never able to live up to those maternal wants while always under the shadow of her brother, Bella finds solace for a few short years with her husband and child—a time full of love and happiness that is so abruptly ended by an accused lead foot and a disastrous secret. Now imagine a happy life with a wife, a job, and something so settling that it’s so good before it’s torn away by a tragedy that fills you with guilt because—even if it isn’t your fault—two lives are lost. Edward may have survived the car crash, he may have survived the court proceedings, and he even may have avoided jail time because of it, but that doesn’t stop him from reliving the moment he took the lives of Bella’s husband, Eric, and their young son, Ben.

Bella and Edward both grieve in their own way as they
attempt to heal from the tragedy that brought them so much pain. She drowns her
sorrows in alcohol, ignoring the empty hallways of her home, hiding behind the
ivory of her cover-up and a carefully placed façade that slowly peels away with
every day that passes. Having lost his wife to a better marriage and not caring
for his conduct in public, Edward punishes his many offenses with an acceptance
for a life behind bars because of his unwillingness to forgive himself. It’s
there within that steel cage that they meet, reconnect, and realize that they
can help each other overcome the tragedy that brought them together in the
first place.
There is a beautiful sorrow about this story of two
broken people, their lives so intricately woven, bordering on that line between
hatred and forgiveness. So many of us are eager to accept the rage. It’s hard
to step back and realize the good that could come out of forgiving because it’s
easier to drown in bittersweet memories and what-ifs. But Hoodfabulous tells a
story that, despite its sad beginning, lifts your spirits with the new-found
love born out of something horrible. Told from the POV of both Edward and
Bella, we see just how similar and different they are from each other and are
able to witness their hesitant fall into a future by each other’s side. We Are Broken teaches you a lesson about
how losing something wonderful doesn’t mean it’s lost forever and that, no
matter how much you hold onto people, sometimes it is better to let them go.
It’s a short read, but it packs a punch that will leave you breathless.
Especially that ending. It’s all about that ending. That ending will twist you
up as much as its twists the story. So if you've read and loved just what exactly
would you like to say to Renee?
