"Counsel" by Write Sisters

Edward is a formidable, ruthless prosecutor in the courtroom, possibly the best ADA in the District Attorney’s office. He is driven to seek justice by a devastating childhood that involved poverty, neglect and witnessing the premature death of his mother. His merciless approach to litigation has earned him the name Counsel by those he works with, and bastard or worse by the criminals he prosecutes. Of course women are naturally drawn to him, not only because of his dominating well-publicized persona in the courtroom, but also because he is extremely good looking. Edward however, has little time, patience or interest in a relationship with these superficial and pretentious women. The obstacles he has had to overcome to get him to where he is in this point in his life have left him uncaring behind his thick, protective, professional shell, but you will come to find out there is so much more to this seemingly arrogant man.

Within a few hours time, his axis is thrown off kilter by a series of events. His so-called live-in girlfriend has had enough of his inattentive ways and packs up and leaves, but he can’t find it in himself to care. He also finds out via the news that his former best friend, now Senator Jasper Whitlock, has been alleged with using a high dollar escort service and maybe more. Then, some woman rear ends his new Mercedes at a stop light because she said she was reaching for her phone, she has the audacity to smart off at him as he is chastising her, and to top it all off, he finds out later she gave him a bogus insurance number and a fictitious name of ‘B. Cygnet’. All he can discern from her graceful movements as she exits her car and the way she is dressed is that she must be a dancer. Of course you can probably figure out that was Bella. She is pretty much an enigma for the first part of the story, but as her character and story are slowly revealed, we find that despite circumstances that forced her to compromise her integrity, there is a lot more to her than first meets the eye. Just hang in there with her before you send the jury out to judge her!

Counsel is brilliantly written by Write Sisters as an intense keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat action thriller both in and out of the courtroom, with coordinated efforts between the DA’s office and the Boston PD to find evidence and round up suspects in a number of high profile criminal cases. The multiple fragments of the plot are expertly interwoven and gradually revealed with stunning precision and clarity. Can they find enough convincing evidence and missing key witnesses to convince to jury in each case? Will anything ever change the repulsion and animosity between the counsel and Bella: a key witness for the prosecution and alleged escort? A couple of the pairings are non-canon and heads up if you are an American reader: although the setting for this story is in Boston, MA, USA, the author is Aussie and often uses the old English spellings and terms. This was overall a magnificent story and I could not put it down. It also has a companion fic, Cygnet, which tells Bella’s story.

Counsel has 56 chapters with a total of 330,532 words. It is rated MA for themes, language and sexual situations.
