Bella Swan is two years older than all of
her other first-year classmates at Force de la Beaute, one of the top ballet
academies in the country. Having barely made the cut because of her late start
into the dance world, she finds herself under the scrutiny and harsh judgment
of her peers, most of whom believe she is not good enough to be there and blame
her for their poor performances. She constantly has to tolerate their cruelly
devised schemes while struggling to catch up and dance to the high standards set
by her teachers. It’s a hard lesson for everyone involved. These are all young
teenagers thrust into a world of beauty, competition, and perfection. Because,
to all of them, it only matters who the best is.
Still, Bella’s dance skills do not go
unnoticed - by her teachers, classmates, and, most importantly, by the
star of the academy, third-year student, Edward Masen. Edward is basically a shoe
in as a soloist for the American Ballet, a long awaited dream of his. He and Bella embark on a journey of discovering a mutual passion for dancing, each other, and how they deal with the spotlight. It is a bond that is so strong, everyone notices. The good, the bad, and all the
players in between. With a big competition between the academy’s classes coming
up called the "Dance Review", Bella and Edward’s bond is tested by their own
misconstrued understandings of each other and their wants and devious plots by
opposing forces.
Author, Amberdeengirl, weaves a story both
on and off stage that has you loving the relationship between Edward and Bella
despite the slow burn that it is. This is a ballet-themed story, and a lot of
it does have the characters on stage performing. Their performances are part of the story and the dancers express their feelings and lives in the way they move
and glide across the stage in such a way that you can’t have one without the
other. You can clearly feel the author’s love for ballet through her words and while reading, I found myself transforming into a struggling ballerina, waving my arms and speaking horrible
French…all in the privacy of my own bedroom of course. On top of that,
the ending leaves you wanting more, but worry not, dear hearts, there is a sequel titled Pas de Trois that picks up right where Clair de Lune ends, and if you thought this one was intense, the
sequel will have you out of breath the entire way.
Clair de Lune consists of 29 chapters and a
total of 132,460 words. The story is rated T for language. A sequel has already been written, Pas de Trois.
