The Distance in Between is set during the Civil War, more specifically between the years 1863-1865. The story starts off in 1865, with the war finally over and Union soldier Colonel Edward Cullen returning to his beloved "Freckles" (his lovely nickname for Bella!). After two long years of blood and gore, he has not only helped to lead the Union to victory but also managed to keep his promise to Bella to come back home to her. Just when both of them are to see each other again, sunflowersongs takes us back two years - to the moment when Bella and Edward meet for the first time and start to fall in love...
Bella and Edward's initial meeting is anything but wonderful: extremely wounded from battle and on the verge of dying, Edward collapses in Bella's garden. The young woman brings him inside and together with her father Charlie immediately begins nursing him back to health. While Edward is recovering from his wounds, he and Bella fall deeply in love (and lust) for each other. Unfortunately it is reality in the form of a waging war that prevents them from moving their relationship to the next step. Once he is strong enough, Edward has to leave his girl behind and go back fighting. With the strong intention of keeping his promise to Bella to come back home alive, Edward sets off his long and bloody journey - not knowing that he left more behind in that small house than just the love of his life...
The fanfiction is mostly written from Edward's perspective, though the author did decide to switch between perspectives once Edward goes off to battle. Though sunflowersongs jumps in time more than once it is surprisingly easy to follow the plot. She also managed to realistically portray the Civil War period and the reader doesn't doubt for a minute that life back then was hard and dangerous. Furthermore, the story does not just revolve around Edward and Bella but also includes Edward's family in the last third of The Distance in Between. All characters mentioned have a significan role to play and hats off to the author for weaving this intricate plot net. Those of you who adore a feisty Bella, who doesn't like compliments and keeps Edward on her toes and those of you who love historic fanfictions will definitely enjoy this story very much! And those of you who are partial to it, should give it a try nonetheless! The Distance in Between has been overlooked for too long - I simply can't praise it enough!
The Distance in Between consists of 34 chapters and a total of 171,614 words. The story is rated MA for graphic violence, foul language, and lemons.
