Bella Swan starts a new period of her life by leaving her small-town home behind and moving to Berkeley, CA. There she begins working at the archives of the university library and constantly runs into mysterious and tortured Edward Cullen.

Just like his sister Alice, Edward was adopted by Carlisle and Esme Cullen after his biological parents died under tragic circumstances. Haunted by his past and a former affair, and in constant pain from a back injury Edward more and more often retreats into his own shell and avoids any human contact whatsoever. It doesn't help that he feels immensely yet unintelligibly drawn to his new colleague Bella Swan. And once these two have to work on a project together, he is suddenly forced to face her instead of hiding...
